The Albuquerque Poet Laureate Program (APLP) celebrates poetry by recognizing a resident poet who makes meaningful connections, honors and serves our diverse community, elevates the importance of the art form, and shares poetry with Albuquerque residents.
APLP is coordinated by an all-volunteer Organizing Committee.
APLP is also happy to partner with the City of Albuquerque which serves as a significant funder for the program as well as provides staff and other support for the Laureate’s community outreach program. The city website features a series of books by the Laureates published by the University of New Mexico Press.
Visit the APLP Facebook page for recent readings and events.
We are currently seeking new members for the APLP Organizing committee. If you are interested in volunteering a few hours a month and support the idea of a robust and lasting Albuquerque Poet Laureate Program, please contact us, below.
The Poet Laureate is chosen by a separate, seven-person Selection Committee through a thorough review of the competitive applications and a unanimous, decision-making process.
Details about the nomination and applications processes for the 2024-2026 Poet Laureate will be announced soon. Anyone can nominate a candidate. Nominated or not, Albuquerque-based poets (who have lived in the greater Albuquerque Metro area for at least 5 years) may apply.
Check back on this website for details and nomination and application forms.
